Putting violence towards social workers into context

The phenomenon of violence towards social workers is examined using two complementary approaches. The first is a detailed description of the incidence of violence both in social work and more generally in society. The second is arz examination of changing practices in social work and a changing dynamic within society both of which will make social work more difficulet. My approach involves an interplay between specific observation and theoretical speculation and in so doing perhaps raises as many questions as it seeks to answer Specifically it questions why issues become matters of public concern at par ticular points in time and also asks why some forms of violence are responded to differently than others.
